Engagement rate benchmarks
| Rate | Band | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1% | Low | Below 1% usually means the audience is passive or partly inactive. |
| 1–3% | Average | 1–3% is the typical range for most Instagram accounts. |
| 3–6% | Good | 3–6% is a genuinely engaged audience — worth highlighting in a pitch. |
| 6%+ | Excellent | Above 6% is excellent and rare outside small, tight-knit communities. |
Bands are general industry guidance, not a guarantee of what a brand will pay. Smaller accounts typically see higher rates than accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers.

Questions creators ask
How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?
Engagement rate by followers = (average likes + average comments) ÷ follower count × 100. It tells a brand what share of your audience reacts to a typical post.
What is a good Instagram engagement rate?
Most accounts land between 1% and 3%. Above 3% is good, and above 6% is excellent. Smaller accounts usually score higher than large ones.
Should I include saves, shares or views?
This calculator uses likes and comments, the two numbers every creator can see on their own posts, so results stay comparable to the rates brands quote.
